Episode #2: Erica Nash Shares How to Transition from Teaching to Instructional Design

how to transition from teaching to instructional designLook in the right places and you'll find thousands of teachers asking how to transition from teaching to instructional design and other careers. Hundreds of them are on Facebook and LinkedIn searching for online courses, jobs, and related information to becoming instructional designers.

Erica Nash is a step ahead with her online business where she serves as an instructional designer and illustrator to business coaches who provide their clients with online courses. Like me, Erica taught for 10 years in public schools before making the entrepreneurial leap. As a teacher, her career path was complicated, including teaching everything from fifth grade writing to a high school culinary arts program she developed.

Her experiences recreating herself as a teacher each year have uniquely suited her to run a business. She also blended the instructional design skills she developed as a teacher with her first love, illustration. Even so, stepping away from her teacher identity and into her role as her own boss was hard.

Listen to this episode to learn how Erica made the transition from the classroom to running her own business. She also discusses how shifting her mindset and building a network of supporters helped guide her journey.

Learn how teaching trained her for her role as an entrepreneur, how she overcame her self-doubts about her abilities, and the beauty of asking for help. She also offers us her best advice for a successful transition into entrepreneurship.

About the Author

I chose to proactively retire from the classroom teaching and share my gifts in a different context. I'm a damn good teacher and I'm tired of working within a frustrating system that won't let me do what I know is right. So I'm taking my business full time -- and I'm still educating, still making a difference in the world. And I want to help you do the same.
